Long Distance Supervision (1 Day)
01-09-M516
In today’s complex world, managers increasingly face the challenge of supervising people who do not work nearby. This challenge may be the result of people working at a remote location, telecommuting, or working different hours than the supervisor does. In this workshop, participants will learn skills in supervising people who are separated from their managers.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

    • Describe three problems for supervisors and employees that arise from supervising people who do not work in the same physical location as the supervisor.
    • Identify four kinds of “distance” that make supervision more difficult.
    • Demonstrate skills that allow them to overcome communication difficulties that arise from ‘long distance’ supervisory situations.
    • Demonstrate techniques that allow them to help people at long distance to feel like they are integral parts of the team.
    • Demonstrate skills in keeping things under control at long distance.
    • Demonstrate an ability to measure the results of employees who work in different locations, work different hours, or work a flexible schedule.
    • Identify three ways in which technology can ease the difficulties of supervising at a distance.

Competencies covered in this course: Communication Skills
