02/11/08 DSHS Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Do you know that kids who drink alcohol before age 15 are 5 times more likely to develop alcohol problems when they are adults? In the 2006 Washington State Healthy Youth Survey, 15% of 8th graders, and 33% of 10th graders said they had used alcohol in the past month, and some are already heavy drinkers.

Find out how alcohol affects the developing brain, and how to talk with your child, at www.StartTalkingNow.org. Check back often for updates, and upcoming information about community meetings to prevent underage drinking.

Parents have the power to keep kids alcohol-free.  If your child might already have a problem with alcohol, find out about state-funded treatment and how to help by calling the Alcohol/Drug Help Line at 1-800-562-1240, or go to www.intervenenow.org.

As of December 10, 2007, an improved version of Employee Self Service (ESS) is available online to state employees.  ESS provides state employees with secure, password-protected access to their earnings statements and allows them to update their address and emergency contact information. Employees can access a full-page version of their current earnings statement, or select and view past statements going back to June 2007. Beginning in 2008, the archive of past statements will include all earnings statements issued during the current calendar year. The final earnings statement of the year will be available until May 1 of the following year.

You can logon to ESS or review the Illustrated Instruction Guide and a Q&A about ESS from any personal computer that has access to the Internet (http://www.dop.wa.gov/ESS/).  Your Personnel ID number and a password are required when accessing Employee Self Service. Passwords are managed by your agency security administrator.
