What are Management Benchmarks?
Management Benchmarks are a list of market segment titles and definitions thought to best represent work done within the state. All Washington and Exempt Managements positions in bands 1-4 are assigned an appropriate benchmark. This information aligns with the most current existing Public and Private sector, in- and out-of-state surveys.
The use of Management Benchmarks provides:
- Greater knowledge and understanding of the states competitive managerial market.
- A standard data set that agencies can use for internal compensation administration and workforce planning.
How are Management Benchmarks assigned?
Agencies determine the organization’s internal process for allocating a market segment benchmark to all internal Washington Management Service (WMS) and Exempt Management Service (EMS) positions Bands 1-4. It is important to remember that the benchmarks are a best fit – not a perfect match for each specific position. The Department of Personnel has guidance materials and consultants available to assist agencies in making the necessary allocations.
